How do you choose a company name? Maybe you’ve set up shop as Smith & Jones, Accountants. Or something straightforward like The Building Supplies Centre. OK. Functional, but more than a little boring.
As you move into being more creative, and if your business needs an online presence, your chosen name could have SEO implications.
If you’ve chosen a clever punning name, or one that has associations with another product, service or marketplace, you could find yourself competing against hundreds of thousands of unintentioned competitors. For example, if you’re a photographer specialising in hand shots (there are some!), the name Digital Photography would be a complete disaster SEO-wise.
I’ve invented this one, but it’s amazing how often there’s a gotcha of some kind hiding in a company name. Try some searches around your proposed company name and see what happens.
